It takes a village to support our mission.

“God told me to open the shelter, what else was I supposed to do?”

Convicted. No, not that kind of conviction. What else could I do when I clearly heard a voice that told me to stop wondering if someone is going to reach out and help those you see on the street and do something myself? I wanted to wait until everything was properly in place, but the forecast for that day in October was freezing cold. I had no choice.

You know what I mean, right? Like when you tell your kids to stop doing something you know you’re about to do yourself. It’s simply wrong. I found myself telling people to stop drinking so much while I was running a bar. Hypocrite! The voice I heard wasn’t audible, but it kept me up at night. I had to do something radical. Open Arms Mission became a reality that night. The bar became a shelter. People were accepted that would have otherwise been walking the streets, sleeping in tents, or finding shelter in awkward spaces that were far from adequate. Welcome to Open Arms.
